A Swiss professional paraglider has carried out an extraordinary aerial maneuver at one of the country’s most recognizable engineering landmarks, combining precise flight control, detailed planning and split-second timing to complete a challenge never before publicly documented at the site.
Patrick von Känel, a 32-year-old athlete from Bern, successfully navigated his paraglider around the towering pillars of the Landwasser Viaduct in eastern Switzerland while a train of the Rhaetian Railway crossed overhead. The flight took place near Filisur in the canton of Graubünden, home to one of the most photographed railway structures in the Alps. The achievement was publicly revealed this week after organizers completed post-flight documentation and safety reviews.
The Landwasser Viaduct is among Switzerland’s best-known railway landmarks. Rising approximately 65 meters above the valley floor, the stone structure carries trains directly into a tunnel carved into a mountainside. The bridge forms part of the Albula Railway, a route recognized as part of the UNESCO-listed Rhaetian Railway heritage corridor and a major attraction for visitors exploring the Swiss Alps.
According to information released about the project, the flight required months of preparation and numerous trial runs before conditions aligned for an attempt. Unlike a conventional cross-country paraglider flight, the challenge involved repeatedly changing direction while maintaining safe clearance from the viaduct’s stone supports. The maneuver demanded exceptional precision because every turn reduced altitude and left little margin for correction.
A central element of the stunt involved “wing-over” turns, a technique in which a paraglider swings through steep banking angles to rapidly alter direction. While visually dramatic, such maneuvers also accelerate descent, making altitude management critical. Pilots must continuously balance speed, positioning and lift while anticipating changing airflow around terrain and structures. In this case, those factors were amplified by the narrow spaces between the viaduct pillars and the requirement to synchronize the flight with a passing train.

The final approach added another layer of difficulty. After completing the last turn around the viaduct, von Känel reportedly had only a very limited landing area available. Trees, bushes and surrounding terrain restricted the approach path, forcing the pilot to transition quickly from the high-energy slalom sequence into a controlled landing. Officials involved in the project described the available space as extremely tight, requiring exact execution from start to finish.
Coordination with railway authorities was another essential component. Representatives of the Rhaetian Railway confirmed that they had been informed in advance and that both testing activities and the final flight were carefully organized. Safety assessments established minimum separation distances from railway infrastructure, including overhead electrical equipment, ensuring the operation could proceed without affecting train services or passenger safety.
The successful attempt reportedly came only after multiple unsuccessful efforts. Von Känel stated that the maneuver was finally completed on the twentieth attempt, underscoring the level of difficulty involved. Achieving the necessary combination of weather, timing, positioning and flight performance required persistence as well as technical expertise.
The achievement adds to a growing list of attention-grabbing projects associated with the Swiss athlete. In recent years, he has become known for pushing the boundaries of precision paragliding and speed-flying through carefully planned challenges in mountainous environments.
